Make sure you donot have any previous version installed from the Ubuntu repository. If yes, then remove it via Synaptic.

AWN Styles :- To give AWN a whole new look, just goto “AWN>Dock Preferences” and select “Lucido”in the ‘Style’ section of ‘Preferences’ tab. You can add multiple Docks to your desktop to make it more usable and more awesome at looks.

AWN Themes :- To add more style to AWN, you can set “Lucido theme” to it inorder to make it look good. Just goto AWN>Dock Preferences>Themes & select ‘Lucido’ theme. You can download ‘Radiance & Ambiance Lucido themes’ from here. Just unzip the file and from the ‘themes’ tab of AWN preferences, install the themes an enjoy the new AWN.

Configuring AWN :- To get a really cool look, add “separator” where you want ‘curved edges’. To add ‘more launchers’ to your AWN, just add ‘Simple Launcher’ from ‘utilities’ in the ‘applets’ tab & then drag and drop the Application icon from Ubuntu main menu to AWN to add its launcher. Simple and workable. Take a look at this :

Docky

Configuring Docky :- Working with Docky is a lot of fun. To add more launchers, just drag and drop Application from Panel menu and to remove, just Drag ‘em out of docky . To add style to your Docky, click Docky>Settings>Themes. To get a 3D look in your dock, just tick ’3D background’ in docky settings.

DockbarX is a free and open-source gnome taskbar applet with grouping and group manipulation. It gives your panel a cool new look and is intended to increase usability of your panels and enable you to use your desktop more efficiently. It also provides the facility to “pin up” your favourite applications on the panels so that you may be able to use them instantly. So, DockbarX in simple terms is an awesome desktop customization tool. We are glad to announce that DockbarX 0.40 is available for Ubuntu now.

New Features & Updates :-

• Theme package have been updated.
• The default theme has changed. The new default theme DBX.
• Recent and most used menus has finally started working for Open Office applications.
• Number of entries in recent and most used menus are increased.
• A few new languages added to translations.

Installation via PPA :- Installing DockbarX in Ubuntu 10.10 or in earlier versions is as simple as installing any other program. We will be using a PPA for this purpose.

For Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, copy the following lines and paste them in the terminal :-

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main/ppa

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install dockbarx

sudo apt-get install dockbarx-themes-extra

and dockbarx will be installed to your system soon. This method is also applicable for Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04.

For Ubuntu 9.04 and earlier :-

Open the terminal and type in this:-

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Now add the following lines and save the file :-

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dockbar-main/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/dockbar-main/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Now, in the terminal tpye :-

sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 38BD81CA

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install dockbarx dockbarx-themes-extra

This would install dockbarX with updated themes to your Ubuntu system.

To be able to access DockbarX’s recent and most used menus for openoffice, you need update zeitgeist to a newer version. If you are using an older version of Ubuntu than 10.10, you need to update zeitgeist to get recent and most used menus for any program. For that, type in

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:zeitgeist/ppa && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0 libx11-6 libxcomposite1 zeitgeist

Note:- Dont forget to replace “jaunty” by your version name like “hardy” for 8.04 and “intrepid” for 8.10.

Getting it to work on GNOME panel:-

1) First, click on the right corner of the screen and remove “windows selector” which is default widows grouping applet.

2) Now on the same panel, right click the panel and click “Add to Panel” and select DockBarX.

3) Add it to the panel and enjoy.

sudo apt-get install awn-applet-dockbarx

Now goto AWN “Dock preferences” and add “DockbarX” applet and its done
