For all those twitter fans out there who don’t leave a second of their life without tweeting here is how you can keep doing so even from your Ubuntu Desktops

Its just a two step process with installation of Adobe Air first and then the DestroyTwitter App

First download the Adobe Air Setup (It can be either .deb or .bin) and also download the DestroyTwitter App

Installing Adobe Air :

• For .deb just double click the downloaded file or open with GDebi (pretty simple isn’t it)
• For .bin file do the following
  1. Pop up The Terminal and browse to the directory where .bin file is present (Or just save it to the /home/user and just open the Terminal)
  2. Type chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin (You Can Also Do The Same Via Right Click>Properties>Permission and Check the Execute Option that allows program to be executed as Script)
  3. Then sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin (Enter Password If Required)

Since we’ve now installed Adobe Air ,installing Apps is just couple of clicks away

Extract the DestroyTwitter app from the zip file you just downloaded  & just double click your DestroyTwitter202.air file and there you go .

Note : Do try couple of more Apps Like TweetDeck, posty, twhirl, DeskTube (or just try a google search)

TC:E puts you into the role of elite mercenary soldier in the conflicts of two internationally operating forces. Sounds cool ,isnt it

Game Modes :-

1. Objective -Each player is deployed(spawns) once per round. As terrorist,  the main aim is to plant a bomb at a specified bombsite and prevent enemy from defusing it till it detonates or to kill all enemies , all this inside a specified timeline . As a special operative, one aims to prevent the terrorists from achieving their goals by killing all the terrorists or defusing their bomb.
2. Body Count -Deployment comes in 10 second increments. Players that have been killed prior to a deployment are continuously redeployed. Yes, you can call it a deathmatch (kick ass).
3. Capture The Flag – CTF simulates the game of capture the flag: teams try to bring a flag back to their base from across the map. Unlikely R-obj (known as Reinforced Objective) the goal is to capture as many areas (marked by flags) as possible before the time limit, or the elimination of either team.

• PC with 1.6 gigahertz (GHhz) or higher processor recommended

• Check “glxinfo | grep rendering ” . Output should be like ” direct rendering: Yes “in the terminal.

Installation :-

First, you need to get Wolfenstein enemy Territory to your system before installing True Combat Elite .

Installing W:ET :- Refer our previous post For Installation

1. Download Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (W:ET) Full 2.60 with this command in a terminal (if it’s not already downloaded):

wget http://ftp.games.skynet.be/pub/wolfenstein/et-linux-2.60.x86.run

2. Installing the game : To install the game, run these commands step by step in the terminal  :-

sudo apt-get install libgtk1.2

chmod +x et-linux-2.60.x86.run

sudo ./et-linux-2.60.x86.run

Before going further and running the game, we apply the W:ET patch 2.6. Now, open a terminal and type the following :-

wget http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetwolfenstein/files/et-2.60b.zip  /*if not downloaded, then download */

unzip ET-2.60b.zip

cd /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/

sudo cp ~/Desktop/Enemy Territory 2.60b/linux/* /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/

(Note: Make sure you place the downloaded fie in /home/user directory after download)

Then , type the following in terminal to run the game to test if its working.

Installing TC:E

After installing W:ET  and testing, the next step is to download and install True Combat Elite.

Download the specified file.

For installing the game , open the terminal and change directory to the destination folder of the downloaded file. Then type

sudo ln -sf /bin/bash /bin/sh

sudo sh true.combat.elite_0.49b-english-4.run

to install the game. Follow the instructions and do accordingly .

Exit the installer and run the game .

The TC:E icon is present in “/usr/local/games/enemy-territory”. So you can also use it to run the game.

After that install the 0.49b patch . The patch is a tar.gz file. Just copy the files in the tar.gz file to /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/tcetest/. You need sudo to do this :

sudo cp ~/Desktop/tce049b_all_os_fixed/* /usr/local/games/enemy-territory/tcetest

and run the game by typing “tc-elite” in the terminal.

Known Issues

1)”VM_Create on UI failed “

Howto Fix :-

The libstdc++5  is missing. For Ubuntu 9.04 and lower, open terminal and type

sudo apt-get install lidstdc++5

Since there is no lidstdc++5 in Ubuntu 9.10 or higher, you need to install libstdc++6 and make a symbolic link to the library libstdc++5. To do that, open terminal and type

sudo apt-get install libstdc++6

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5

2) Server not starting :-

Try this :-

sudo apt-get install libx11-6 ia32-libs

and then try to run the server. It should work now.

3) Sound issues :-If you are not getting any sound in the game, then try the following fixes.

sudo apt-get install alsamixer

and then try to run the game.

or

sudo -s
echo “et.x86 0 0 direct” > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
echo “et.x86 0 0 disable” > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
exit

Exit all music players, web browsers etc. then try:

killall esd
et

If your sound works fine, then:

sudo -s
echo “echo “et.x86 0 0 direct” > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss” >> /etc/environment
echo “echo “et.x86 0 0 disable” > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss” >> /etc/environment
exit

This will save the setting.

But, for the time being , we will keep playing steam games on linux. How? The answer itslelf is Playonlinux.

PlayOnLinux (POL) is a tool to help Linux users run games and programs for Windows on Linux, via the use of (as a front-end for) Wine. When you install applications with Wine all your file are saved in the same prefix. This maybe isn’t a problem, until you realize a file in one program is messing up another program. PlayOnLinux uses different prefixes for all applications, so you can have specified configurations, settings and file-trees for each program.

One “easy” method of installing Steam is with Play On Linux.

Installing POL:

First download the latest version of POL here .

Follow these steps to install via Terminal:

Open the terminal and type the following according to your Ubuntu version :

For Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx :-

sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_lucid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install playonlinux

For Ubuntu 9.10 – Karmic Koala :-

After successfully installing PlayonLinux, just navigate to Ubuntu main menu and Click Games>playonlinux and start the PlayonLinux interface.

Installing MS fonts:

POL at first run will start the Update and will ask you to install Microsoft Core Fonts on your computer.

1) Click Forward to install MS fonts.

2) Accept the license terms and click forward.

3) The installer will now download and install MSfonts on your computer. Click Forward to continue using POL.

Install Steam :-

1) Open POL and goto “Most Downloaded” to get the list of programs and applications which are most popular.

2) Clickthe Steam icon and install. Follow the steps and do as the installer instructs .

At the end of installation, the installer will ask you to create a desktop icon of steam and add steam to your main menu. Check both and click OK.

Install DirectX 9.0c:

1) After that, again navigate to POL and install DirectX 9.0c from the interface as the steam games require DirectX rendering.

2) Just Click Most Downloaded > DirectX End User Runtimes and follow the steps accordingly .

Logging in:

You have successfully installed steam. Now, its the time to game .

Login to Steam using your Steam ID by Clicking “Login to an Existing Account ” or create a steam ID using the steam interface by clicking “Create a New account “. Its free to register yourself on steam however Steam games are not free. Visit Steam Store to purchase the Games you want to play on Ubuntu.

After getting your games, just navigate to Steam interface and click “My Games”. You will see the games are available to download and install. Double Click the Game icon and  install it. After that, you are ready to Steam on Ubuntu.

Counter Strike 1.6 Steam in Ubuntu:

Uninstall:

To remove Steam, simply select it in the list and click Remove. Note that while the application and all its files and registry settings are deleted, currently PlayOnLinux may not remove all shortcuts to the application.You might have to do it manually . Just select the shortcut and press Shift+delete .

Note: Games run with this method will be slower than running them on Windows because the games are not native executables for Linux. To get the best performance we will need to wait for Valve to release a native Steam client.

Refreshing the Repository: If you are unable to find the application you want, you may want to refresh the local list of applications by clicking the “Refresh the repository” button. This will make sure you have the latest available scripts.

Installation:

There is currently no live version available of Ubuntu Studio, and consequently, no graphical installer. In addition, the disk image is 1.45 GB, too large to fit on a standard CD, and so the recommended installation medium for Ubuntu Studio is a DVD or USB drive . Ubuntu Studio can also be installed on a pre-existing Ubuntu system by installing the “ubuntustudio-desktop” package from Synaptic Package Manager or via APT(Advanced packaging tool).

The Synaptic way :

Just goto System >Administration >synaptic Package Manager and open it .

Then type in search box “Ubuntu Studio ” and select all the packages and mark all of them for installation that start with the name ” Ubuntu Studio” like Ubuntu-studio-wallpapers, Ubuntu-studio-audio,menu,sounds,look,default-settings,audio-plugins,icon-theme,gdm-theme,controls etc. and mark all of theme for installation.

Now, apply changes and wait a little .

Finally , restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Alternatively, a Dedicated installation :-

The first step is to download the file i.e. .ISO image of Ubuntu studio for which you can use the above links.Now, after the download , burn it into a DVD or you can use UNetBootin for creating a USB installer Disk (read here) and boot from it. The installation procedure is totally same as that of basic ubuntu OS.

Just basic Steps:-

1)Select your language and start with the installation.

2)Select the “Install Ubuntu Studio” option and then press enter .

The installer will scan your Source and your hardware after that.

3)The system will ask you for your username and password you want to set up .

4)The installer will ask for Partitioning.Here, i have used default partitioner set-up. If you want to go with the Manual partitioning , you can refer here. After all seetings have been done, press enter to continue and now your system will be installed with proposed changes.

5)It will finish the installation and then prepare it for first use.

6)After all work is finished ,the system will be restarted by pressing enter .

7)Lastly, type in your Username and password(if any)and enjoy your Ubuntu Studio 9.10 on the go

Installation Process :

For installing Wine ,please refer our Wine-post or one can also use Ubun-Student for installationof wine to your computer system.

Installing WineXS:

We at first download the file into the destination folder where we need winexs to be into say it is /home/user.

cd/home/user

sudo wget http://tsx.nl/files/winexs-1.4.2.tgz

Now, we need to extract the tar.gz file and then proceed the installation .

tar xvzf winexs-1.4.2.tgz

If everything has been done correctly, then we must be having a directory named winexs in /home/user. We now need to get access to that directory , for that type in :

cd winexs

Now to run winexs , type :

./winexs

and done.

Above UI is WineXS, the key for using wine to the fullest for non-geeks and regular users.Install whatever you want , use it the way you want! IMO , this is actual computing power

It depends on GTK+ runtime environment in Linux if statically linked with wxWidgets

It has a nice GUI with Multi Threading and support for both FTP & HTTP protocols. You can also add mirrors for the download you selected and also choose between the languages. (currently English and Chinese). It works seamlessly on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

You may find the interface a bit weird, but the project is really promising.

The management was good and has categories for Running, Paused, Failed, Finished and Deleted Tasks as expected

MultiGet file downloader

INSTALLATION

Press Alt+F2 and do:

sudo apt-get install multiget

After you’re done with installation you can access it in: Applications –>Internet

What I found a bit weird was that it wasn’t available in FlashGot, so using it with Firefox was a bit difficult but here’s a work around :

• Open FlashGot Options (Tools -> FlashGot ->More Options)
• Click Add
• Enter the download manager name: MultiGet (or whatever you want)
• Browse the location of MultiGet at /usr/bin
• Find MultiGet then click Open
• This is the important steps. insert [url=URL] [refer=REFERER] in the command line arguments place. That is for make flashgot can work together with multiget
• Finally, click Ok

Overall, I’ll give it a rating of 3 out of 5.

Our guinea pig for this post were few chat clients (both for GNOME & KDE).

We’ve tested them for their ease of use interface, plugins (customizations)  & of course capabilities to handle various protocols. There are really a great amount of IM protocols out there (checkout this list) and covering all these was a bit difficult job. So, what we tested upon were the most frequently used IM clients i.e Yahoo & Jabber (Gtalk) and results are following:

Best Yahoo IM Client : GYachE Improved

Best Gtalk Client : Empathy (Now I figured why Ubuntu chose it over pidgin)

Best Plugins : Pidgin (Of course what else you can expect)

Best Interface : Kopete (Really this deserves more than that)

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Kopete

If you are planning no voice chat then IMO you should go with Kopete. It has got a really simple & clear interface (probably due to its base environ KDE).

• To install Kopete go to Applications>Add/Remove Applications
• In search box type Kopete (always enable “Show all Applications”)
• Select Kopete Instant Messenger & click “Apply Changes”

It has also got plugins support with a brilliant notification icons.The configuration part was really well built.Kudos to the programmers….!!!

Pidgin

If you want a lots of plugins n stuff that can configured you should go for Pidgin.

It is available for Windows too, so probably makes easy transition for windows users

It is preinstalled in Ubuntu 9.04 but is replaced with Empathy in later releases and still if you want it then it’s available in Add/Remove Applications.

Pidgin supports more than 15 IM protocols with around 68 worldwide languages with features like customizable smilies,music tracker & lot more just via its plugins. Xfire users have a good news, Gfire is a very good plugin for Pidgin for chatting through the xFire protocol in Ubuntu.

But you might be probably thinking what the heck was special in Empathy that it replaced Pidgin.I figured it out as I was writing this post.

Emptahy: GTalk (Voice) For Ubuntu

We’ll Empathy seemed to be a hidden marvel. Though it might’ve been used but will get really more users after its entry as default chat client in Ubuntu. It supports many IM protocols (probably more than Pidgin does) but lacks plugins like Pidgin. Interface of both is quite similar. Empathy has got few skins but doesn’t support smilies like Pidgin (probably we’ll see this feature in later versions). Where Empathy scores over Pidgin is its ability to support voice calls (suitable for GTalk) though it still lacks the Skype Protocol. Its more like in the country of the blind people, the one-eyed man is king. Since I don’t want an IM clients war here what I feel is that there is a lot of scope for both the client to work upon.

Installation of Empathy is really simple. You may either go to Add/Remove Applications and search for “Empathy” or you may chose the following method if you want the latest version rather than the default one.For this you have to update your repositories, which is probably you’ve never done before. So let’s do it

To update repositories you may either choose the graphical way or the terminal(as always).

Graphical Way : System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager->Settings->Repositories

Terminal Way : sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then you may add the desired values in that and for this instance its following :

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/telepathy/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/telepathy/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

As now we have updated the repositories its time to do the installation.

Press Alt+F2 and enter the following

GYachE Improved : Yahoo! for Ubuntu

We’ll, there’s a reason why GYachE Improved (also known as GYachI) is mentioned over here.

GyachE is very good client for Yahoo, because it supports almost all the features like avatars, audibles including Voice & Webcam support.

The DEB Installation Package can be downloaded from here.

All these applications will be available in Applications>Internet

Gtalk CONFIGURATION

Finished with all and still not able to connect to GTalk then here’s probably what you’re looking for.

Set the following options in your IM client’s (or override the default values) configuration

SERVER : talk.google.com

PORT : 5223

Check “Use Old SSL”
