The LibreOffice Project has announced Release Candidate 1 of the upcoming Libreoffice 3.4 release. The project is also announcing a change in its announcement strategy — the announce list will only be used for final and stable releases. As part of the announcement, Italo Vignoli mentioned that there seems to be some confusion about the LibreOffice scheduling and development process, and selecting the “right” release of LibreOffice. LibreOffice is on a “time based release model” and the project is avoiding schedule slips. He also encouraged users to select the “right release of LibreOffice for each situation.”

Conservative users who want very stable releases are encouraged to choose a commercially supported version, or at least wait for a point release that has all the bugs shaken out.

Users who are helping with development, testing, or just want to experience the “bleeding edge,” are encouraged to run 3.4.0 rc2 when released or even the nightly releases. This release actually came up with a few of bugfixes and updates. So, here we go -

Packages for other x86 and AMD64 Linux systems are available, as well as Windows and Mac OS X binaries.

Installation

After downloading the appropriate file, open the Terminal and type this -

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice?
cd ~/Downloads
tar xvzf LibO_3.4.0rc1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
cd LibO_3.4.0rc1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
exit

Remember to change the file names with yours (if 64bit) or take care of the download directories as we used default ones here. Take a look -

The Document Foundation has come up with a good news today i.e. the second micro release of Libreoffice 3.3 is out now. This is primarily a bug-fix release which is all set to improve the stability & usability of the software and sets the platform for the next release viz Libreoffice 3.4, due in mid May. If you already have LibreOffice 3.3.2 RC2, then you dont need to remove it and reinstall it all over. Just wait for the update to hit the Update Manager.

I – PPA Install

One of the easiest method of installing Packages in Ubuntu. Just type in the following commands & rest will be done automatically. (No need to download anything from the above link)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libreoffice libreoffice-gnome

Note: This PPA might take some time to get updated to the newest version but we think it would have been done already.

II – Deb Package Install

Download the above listed file and follow the instructions for installing LibO 3.3.2 ->

sudo apt-get remove openoffice*.* libreoffice*.*
cd ~/Downloads
tar xvzf LibO_3.3.2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
cd LibO_3.3.2rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Access Libre from Applications>Office>Libreoffice suite.

Updates & Bugfixes

• Fixed incorrect cursor navigation.
• The GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.?
• Fix to prefer gcc __sync functions over pthread on arm.
• Work-around IM problems with KDE4 integration.
• This release contains all the security fixes from OpenOffice.org in 3.3.0, and perhaps more as a side-effect of the code clean-ups.
• Dictionary and Translation updates.

It’s been a while since we posted about LibreOffice’s development (beta release). Since then, LibreOffice has gone through rigorous development and now here we have the first stable release of LibreOffice with a lot of updates and bug-fixes. LibO as we know it now has the PPA so its easy for us to download it and keep it up-to-date. The Document Foundation has announced the release of LibreOffice 3.3.0 Final, all set for production machines. This release is fully stable and ready to use.

Installation

PPA Method :-> Installing Libreoffice is now really easy because PPA is here. Just type in these lines in the terminal :-

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libreoffice libreoffice-gnome

For KDE  >_

sudo apt-get install libreoffice-kde

Note:- If you choose PPA method for installing LibO 3.3, then there is no need to download anything at all.

.deb Method :-> Simply download the files and extract it from the archive and install i like the old times

cd $home/Downloads

Installing LibreOffice in Ubuntu :-

Installing LibreOffice is same as that of installing OpenOffice, simple and fast. Locate the downloaded file (.tar.gz) and place it on your desktop (for convenience).

Open the terminal and type :-

cd ~/Desktop

tar xvzf LibO_3.3.0_beta2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz

After the file extraction process is completed, access the directory of the extracted file to continue the installation.

cd ~/Desktop/en-US/DEBS

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Ok. Now we are done with installing libreoffice (#great).

To put LibreOffice on ubuntu-panel, type-in this :

cd ~/Desktop/en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration

sudo dpkg -i libreoffice3.3-debian-menus_3.3-1_all.deb

and done. So Easy!!!.

Now, access LibreOffice from Applications> Office > LibreOffice.

Note:  In the command ‘cd ~/’  , the ‘~/’ corresponds to ‘/home/user’ directory provided that “user” is replaced by your own username.

Get Scribus :- ‘Scribus 1.5.0 svn’ can be downloaded and installed using the Ubuntu PPA of Scribus-Trunk. Open the terminal and type :-

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:scribus/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install scribus-trunk

and done. Access Scribus from Applications>Graphics>Scribus(Trunk).

Scribus-Basics : Moving over to the basics, here we will be showing howto use Scribus for creating Documents like PDFs etc.

Creating and editing PDF files >

• Add document – Goto File>New to add a new document. It comes by default everytime you start Scribus.
• Import Text – Goto Insert>Insert Text frame and enter object size. After that, import text file, any document file (.csv, .odf , .html, .htm, .pdb, .txt etc.) already written by you whose pdf you want to create. Else you can write whole text yourself.
• Import Image – Goto Insert> Insert Image Frame and enter the object size. Right click the frame to select an image which you want to add. You can resize and move the frame on the page anywhere you want.
• Adding Pages – Goto Pages>Insert.. and give the no of pages to insert and press Enter.
• Besides Text & Images, you can also add Table, Shape, Polygon, Line etc.
• After adding everything, take a final look through the whole page carefully. Edit anything you want and then save the file as PDF.

Open the file using any PDF reader to view your own PDF eBook . This is just the 1% of the actual capabilities of Scribus we have covered here. Move on and start playing with it to know more about it.

We are very sorry for taking long to post a new post. We’ve been busy lately.

PDFedit is a PDF editor for Linux and supports word-processor style editing of the unencrypted PDF files. It is pretty easy to use and can be used if you want to make some changes to your PDF files and then distribute them.

To install it, either you can use Add/Remove or the Synaptic Application manager or simply use:

sudo apt-get install pdfedit

in the terminal.

The Open Office Suite in Ubuntu is just the perfect blend you need for all your Office needs.As Wiki says OpenOffice.org (OO.o or OOo), commonly known simply as OpenOffice, is an office application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. It is written using the GTK and supports plugins like Firefox which provides it additional functionality.

Comparing with MS-Office or WordPerfect,this pack just fulfils all the needs of a Rookie like me  that too for free.Now that’s something really satisfying since I don’t have to payout a hefty amount just for my small needs.Though online options too are available but they haven’t developed that much yet.

OOo has been divided into 6 components few of which are available by default in Ubuntu

Those six components are

• Writer (Available By Default)
• Calc (Available By Default)
• Impress (Available By Default)
• Base
• Draw (Available By Default)
• Math (Available By Default)

Note : To install rest components you may use Applications >Add & Remove and search for “OpenOffice”

To Access OOo go to Applications>Office and select the desired component.We’ll take  here the 3 basic components of it which are used most

Now lets take a quick look at these 3 components

OOo WRITER aka OOo Word Processor

Writer does all the basic stuff of word processing and is similar to MS Word and is can save files in PDF format (not available in earlier versions of MS Office).It can also save documents in multiple formats including DOC, ODF and many more.

OOo Calc aka OOo Spreadsheet

Calc is similar to MS Excel & is rather better than it in many fields. It provides a number of features not present in Excel, including a system which automatically defines series for graphing, based on the layout of the user’s data . Also it has functionality to have customised plugins according to your needs which can be downloaded from OpenOffice.Org Site.

OOo Impress aka OOo Presentation

Impress similar to Apple Keynote or MS PowerPoint and  is used for presentations.Its supports plugins like rest its counterparts and also allows exporting the files to swf format(Adobe Flash) that is generally present in our browsers these days .It also has presentation wizard that guides you through the presentation customization on go.
