The Actual Worth of Your Linux Machine

31 Oct

So this idea struck up in my mind when I saw a recent post about what actually is the original market share of Linux. The post gives great insights into how the market share is being computed and frankly IMHO there are significant amount of discrepancies in calculating that for couple of reasons, major one of them being that many people pay for it & many get paid ;) .

We use open source softwares daily in our life the fact is we just don’t know about it. Most of the people using Android on there smart-phones out their don’t even know its open source. People tend to buy sh!+ (sorry had to put this) for few bucks rather then trying FOSS(Free open source software) just cause it hurts their standards & corporate world has taught them that nothing comes for free.

Not going deep into that never ending debate, the question arises, well we are some way or another attached to FOSS then what actually is the real value of FOSS we are using. Another reason for this post was that I was really wanted to figure out what if all these OSS were paid.

For starters

are all open source and yes I’m not kidding..!!! 8)

LibreOffice 3.3.0 in Ubuntu

24 Oct

LibreOffice is a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites, and available on a variety of platforms. LibreOffice is a fork of the famous project OpenOffice project which is now under Oracle. It is free software and servers all your basic needs. It is the result of immense efforts by The Document Foundation aimed at making an Office suite or desktops that servers all your needs for free.

A group of key contributors to the OpenOffice.org (OOo) project have formed a new organization i.e.  The Document Foundation to manage a community-driven fork of the popular open source office suite. Their goal is to liberate the project from Oracle’s control and create a more inclusive and participatory ecosystem around the software & save it from sudden-death just like Opensolaris project.

Shutter: Feature-rich Screenshot App for Ubuntu

27 Sep

Shutter is a free & open-source feature-rich screenshot program which has been licensed under GPL v3. It allows user to capture almost everything. It can take a screenshot of a specific area, window, your whole screen, or even of a website – apply different effects to it, draw on it to highlight points, and then upload to an image hosting site, all in one window. Isn’t it awesome ?

Lets take a look at the Features :-

1)Capturing the Desktop :-

  1. Capture a Specific Area:  Select any region of the screen and capture only those parts you really need.
  2. Capture a Window: Simply use your mouse to select the window you want to capture.
  3. Capture the Desktop: It does not only capture all the contents of your desktop, it also supports Multi-monitor settings.
  4. Capture a Website: Shutter uses gnome-web-photo to capture a website without opening a browser window.
  5. Capture a Menu or Tooltip: Capturing menus or tooltips is very easy with Shutter. You select one of the options and a (user-defined) countdown starts. During this time you can open the desired menu or let a specific tooltip come up. Shutter will recognize and capture it. This one is my favourite :)
