Ubuntu Studio is a multimedia editing/creation derivative of Ubuntu. It is built for audio, video and graphic enthusiasts or professionals. But as it is free and open-source, everyone is free to use. It is an officially recognized derivative of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, which is explicitly modified for general multimedia production.

For Software Developers/Providers

Personal Package Archive (PPA) service is provided for Ubuntu by Launchpad via which you can distribute software and updates directly to Ubuntu users. Create your source package, upload it and Launchpad will build binaries and then host them in your own apt repository.
Refer this link for more on how to create your own PPA to distribute software.

For Users (Like Us)

PPA (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas) can be easily used to add new sources for software not available in Software Centre.PPAs work like normal Ubuntu archives. You can install software in the usual way — for example, through apt-get or synaptic — and whenever there’s an update Ubuntu will prompt you to install it. Both the x86 & x64 architectures are supported by PPA.

Here is an example, to add the repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: user/ppa-name

So pop up your Terminal and try adding few of them from below

Open Office : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openoffice-pkgs/ppa

Google Chrome Browser Beta : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/beta

ClamAv Antivirus : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-clamav/ppa

Remember to run sudo apt-get update after you are done with above

Here is a look at a successfull addition via PPA

If you still feel you are bit of a Linoob just try using Ubuntu Tweak

Ultimate Edition is an operating system based on Ubuntu Linux Distribution. The creators aim was to create a better user experience and improved usability. Its a third-party Ubuntu derivative.

‘Ultimate Edition’ started off as Ubuntu Christmas Edition, and was made as a Christmas present for the Ubuntu community. The creator, Glen Cady aka TheeMahn, then created Ubuntu Ultimate 1.1. Ultimate Edition has more software pre-installed and ready for use even in the Live CD/DVD environment than Ubuntu. Ubuntu Ultimate 1.2 was released shortly after 1.1 with even more new software. To answer the call of gamers, TheeMahn then built Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition. On October 18, 2007, TheeMahn received an e-mail from Canonical asking not to use the Ubuntu name or logo due to violation of trademark policy. Ubuntu Ultimate then became ‘Ultimate Edition’. Additional softwares such as Java, Flash, Acrobat Reader or Google Earth, which were removed due to licensing agreements, can be installed using an integrated custom repository. The latest release Ultimate Edition 2.6 is based on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS.

As we all know that Ubuntu Karmic/Jaunty and other versions come in a limited 700 mb CD, that means to have a computer running properly with Ubuntu requires an Internet connection. Sometimes, we come across hard-drive failures etc., so this creates a problem of downloading all the updates and applications again. Moreover, internet is not available everywhere. So, to solve this, we have an application that will do just fine. APTonCD is a tool with a graphical interface which allows us to create one or more CDs or DVDs with all of the packages we’ve downloaded via ‘apt-get’ , ‘synaptic package manager’, ‘ubuntu software center’ and ‘add/remove’, creating a removable repository that we can use on other computers also. APTonCD also allows you to automatically create media with all of the .deb packages located in one specific repository, so that we can install them into other computers without the need for an Internet connection’. It also serves as a backup to our installed applications, programs and updates.

Download:

all.deb : click here

tar.gz : click here

Installation:

Option 1) If you have downloaded the .deb file (recommended), you just need a double click to go . Easy, isn’t it

Option 2) For the second one, you can easily compile the downloaded source code (tar.gz file) using the following commands in terminal:-

$ tar -xvzf aptoncd-*.tar.gz
$ cd aptoncd/
$ sudo make install

How to Create an APTonCD image :

It creates an image of desired size from packages downloaded via Synaptic Package Manager / Apt-get. It requires Administrator privileges. Don’t worry, just type in the admin password and go.

Note: External packages that were not installed can also be put in the image file.

Steps to create APTonCD image:

1) Selecting installed packages:
By default, all the packages saved in /var/cache/apt/archives/ directory . We have the option to add/remove the packages for APTonCD media just checking/unchecking them on the list. When we add/remove a package, the total file size is automatically updated.

2) Adding external packages:
We can also add those packages to the APTonCD image that weren’t installed on the system. There are two ways to do this: we can use the ‘Add Package’ button then find and open the .deb package to be added. The other way is simply drag-and-drog the package from hard-drive to APTonCD window.

3) Destination folder for image:
By default, the image generated by APTonCD is saved in /home/user/aptoncd directory . It can be changed by using the option ‘destination folder’ .

4) Burning Created Image:
When an APTonCD image is successfully created, we can burn it into CD/DVD

How to Restore APTonCD :

It restores an image from an already created APTonCD media and allows to select and install packages offline. This also requires Administrator privileges. Also, restoring a .ISO image created using APTonCD is also same.

Steps to restore a created image:

1) Open CD/DVD:-
Put the CD/DVD created by APTonCD in the drive.

2) Selecting packages to recover:-It shows a list with all packages available to restore. By default, all packages are checked, but you can just uncheck the packages at will.

3) Copying files to another system:-
The packages selected are copied from the APTonCD media to /var/cache/apt/archives/ directory. In this way,the packages are available and you can install them using apt-get or synaptic without need to download them.

It’s an easy way to get all the required softwares and packages to run Ubuntu just fine.

Note: By default, latest versions of all softwares are restored.

Njoy !!!

Ubuntu is considered as one of the most user-friendly Linux distributions available today. But still, there are some hidden functions and settings that will improve your Ubuntu experience to a great extent. Though you don’t need a third-party program to unlock them, you just need Ubuntu Tweak. It will save a lot of time of yours as this application gives you a UI to control and configure your system settings yourself. Ubuntu Tweak makes it easy to change hidden system and desktop settings. Unfortunately, it is only for GNOME desktop environment. This is still under heavy development and a very good utility for Ubuntu users. Tweak is more or less like Ubun-student but a bit more stable and reliable with lesser bugs. But this application is also going heavy development, so watch for updates and latest releases regularly. It was basically build for the new Ubuntu users to help them getting a experience. We recon this a must have for your Ubuntu Desktop and we are sure that it will improve the usability of your Ubuntu desktop significantly.

Changes OverView:

Support of Ubuntu 9.04 and before DROPPED.

Use all native icon in UI.

Migrate from policykit to policykit-1, no C code any more.

Support dynamic-module, only load module what desktop supports.

Redesign the sidebar and titlebar.

New Features :

Application Center: improve from Add/Remove, supports online data sync.

Add the option to disable user list in gdm.

Add indicator-session dialog control.

Improve the computer page, add “Change Hostname” feature.
Source Center: improve from Third-Party Source, supports online data sync.

Add the menu and button icon options to gnome settings. – Add the show desktop icon again.

Update Manager: a simple but more human-readable update manager.

INSTALLATION

Latest release Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.x: (read here)

Lets move to the Old native way i.e the Terminal way to Install (Refer Screenshots For Help)

Note : An easy way to add sources of Ubuntu-tweak(work since Ubuntu 9.10): Go to System / Administration / Software Sources, click on Other Software tab, click Add button, and enter

ppa:tualatrix/ubuntu-tweak

This will add the PPA repo and the GPG key automatically. You can also do it from command line by running:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ubuntu-tweak

To add the source of Ubuntu Tweak on your machine: Open your terminal, first import the key:

sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com FE85409EEAB40ECCB65740816AF0E1940624A220

type the command to run gedit to modify the sources.list:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

For Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

Or Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Or Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu karmic main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

Then update the source and install or upgrade Ubuntu Tweak:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

If you have installed, just type:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and done.

We are good to go. Launch Ubuntu Tweak : Goto Applications > System Tools > Ubuntu Tweak

Ubuntu Tweak is a good ubuntu manager and will help you a lot with it . It will surely improve you Ubuntu experience by making things easier and faster .

Note : The latest release(Tweak 0.5.x) is only for Ubuntu-Karmic users. Older versions of ubuntu support the previous builds.

We have been looking forward for a replacement of Virtualbox OSE . This thing started our quest for finding a Virtualization application to fulfill the needs with an easy-to-use procedure. We found KVM in Add/remove while we were looking for something alike YaVM – Yet another Virtual Machine (An application developed for openSUSE in 2006 to serve as basic virtual machine that comes with the os preinstalled). Xen , the geeky Virtual machine by SUSE linux enterprise is a virtualization powerhouse. While Xen offers quite complex procedure requiring you to boot a patched Xen kernel to create and run a Virtual machine – KVM is a loadable module which runs with the OS’s default kernel module. The only thing it requires is that your processor should have the architecture to support visualization .

For this type:

kvm

in the terminal and see the result:

QEMU PC emulator version 0.9.1 (kvm-84), Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard
usage: qemu [options] [disk_image]

If you see the above message, then you should be smiling as you are green to go for virtualization with your hardware.

But if your CPU does not, in fact support Hardware virtuallization, you will get output such as the following:

$ kvm
Could not initialize KVM, will disable KVM support
Ubuntu does not support running KVM without hardware acceleration. Sorry.

So lets start our work with Virtualization weapons at hand. First, head on over to the KVM HOME PAGE

Best feature of KVM is that it is part of the OS and is not dependent upon a 3rd party vendor . Also, it’s very easy to maintain as you update your system, and load new kernel revisions, as the module will not break like VirtualBox and VMware solutions would. Also, it’s far less problematic to manage than Xen, which is entirely unsuitable for a desktop system IMO . KVM really is more of a direct competitor to Xen than to a workstation solution like VirtualBox or VMware workstation, and has some very powerful features, I will never tap into here on my home system. By design however, it’s far less intrusive on a standard Linux desktop than Xen.

Now we have our kernel module working properly and rest everything in place so must get back to business . I will use Kubuntu for the testing purpose coz its my personnel favourite and it very light too.

Follow these steps to set up your virtual Machine :-

Launch :- Goto Applications>System tools and start KVM .Then choose the virtualizaton method to full virtualization if your processor supports that feature.

Installation Method :- Now choose the media from which the OS is to be installed to the machine . Also chose the OS type and its Variant .

Installation Media : Select he ISO image location (whether from External drive or already present image from HDD) .

Allocating Space:- Choose the disk space you want to allocate to the machine’s Virtual Hard drive. Allocate space wisely for stability issues .Then select to allocate the whole virtual hard disk to the machine .
Note: If you don’t allocate the whole virtual hdd to the machine , then the machine will allocate space for itself while it is running and if the space in that partition goes out , then the data in the virtual machine is likely to get corrupted. You can allocate additional space like network drives etc to your virtual drive.

Memory & CPU allocation :- Allocate RAM for your machine which it will be able to utilize to max. You have to allocate RAM for peak run and startup differently. Do it generously for proper running of he host and virtual machine . Eg: i have 2 gb RAM and i allocated 750 mb to the machine to max and for start-up , i gave it 512 mb. You can change the se settings in the hardware section of the GUI while running the machine.

Finishing Job :- Check your preferences and Click finish & let the magic happen. The installation of a virtual OS is totally same as installing a regular OS. So, now we are done with it .

Obviously , KVM is much more capable than we discussed just now. We were just able to do the basics, rest you can try on your own after installing the application.

Happy Virtualization !!!

So lets now understand few basics regarding software installation & user levels, cause in Linux both go hand in hand

Lets start with Terminal which is equivalent to the Command Prompt of Linux (but much more powerful than that of Windows).

It can be acessed by going to Applications —–> Accessories —–> Terminal

Since we’ll use Terminal too often , so just press Alt+F2

Type anything you wish to RUN in terminal there & just check the “Run in Terminal“ before pressing Run.

Running commands as root/administrator

There is one user ‘root’ in Linux which has access to everything in the operating system with no restrictions,so it is the root of all evil . It is equivalent to Administrator in Windows Vista/XP .

The user account which you created while installing or in simple words, the account which you are using does not have full access to the system. Why? The reason is simple – to improve security. Moreover, to avoid messing & unauthorised changes to the operating system.

To exec commands as ‘root’, you’ve to prefix ‘sudo’ before every command.

Open terminal and type nautilus….Nautilus will get opened, but you can’t delete/modify the system files in folders like /etc, /var..

Now close nautilus…and type ‘sudo nautilus‘ in the terminal and then enter your password. Don’t worry, you’ll not be asked for the password everytime. This time, Nautilus has been opened as root and you can make changes & delete the system files. But don’t try doing that at the moment.

Typical users just have full access to their /home directories not to the system files.

This is actually controlled by the ‘Permissions‘ which can only be changed by the ‘root’ if root is owner of the files. As ‘root’ is the ‘owner’ of the system files, it has full access to them.

Installing softwares & Packages

You might be wodering how we install softwares in Linux. So, here is a bit of theory about ‘packages’ in Linux.

In Linux, softwares are installed using files known as ‘Packages‘.

There are mainly 3 types of packages:

deb – Debian packages which is used by Debian linux and derivatives such as Ubuntu, Mint etc.

RPM – this was originally used by Red Hat, but now it is also used by distributions like Fedora, openSUSE, mandriva etc.

tar.gz – standard tar + gzip compressed packages, used by distributions like Slackware, Arch etc.

The packages are managed by a ‘Package manager’ which makes installing, upgrading and removing of the packages easy.

For Ubuntu, the common Package manager are ‘aptitude’, frontend for ‘dpkg’ & Synaptic Package manager is the graphical frontend, which can be used to manage packages with a help of a GUI.

To access, Synaptic Package Manager ( go to System —–> Administration —–> Synaptic Package Manager )

To install a package, you can do either of following:

Open Synaptic Package Manager —–> Tick the package you want to install after searching in the categories —–> Click Apply.

Packages can also be installed by going to Applications —–> Add/Remove. This is basically a more user friendly version of Synaptic Package Manager.

Directly download packages from sites like:
http://packages.ubuntu.co and http://www.getdeb.net

sudo apt-get install <package_name> in the terminal.
Tip: You can search the Ubuntu package repository using the search box in Firefox.

And to remove you’ve can do either of following:

Open Synaptic Package manager —–> Uncheck the package you want to uninstall after searching —–> Click Apply. Alternatively, you can also use Add/Remove.

sudo apt-get remove <package_name> in the terminal.

Next time we’ll be talking about making your Ubuntu look really nice and will also let you practice a bit on installation procedures. Till then keep installing some really nice softwares using Add/Remove.
