MyUnity is a Unity Tweak tool for Ubuntu that is used to adjust, tweak and customize Unity desktop. MyUnity is also available for the Ubuntu 12.04 in the repositories so it can be installed right from Ubuntu Software Center. It is very simple, lightweight, and user friendly.

Install MyUnity

Type the following commands in the terminal is sequence and you are good to go.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:myunity/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install myunity

Unity Settings

With MyUnity, the following things are at your fingertips :

1) Unity Launcher – You can edit the behaviour and looks to our comfort.
2) Dash – Changing size and look of the dash has never been easier.
3) Panel – Adjusts the transparency of the panel.
4) Desktop – To manage desktop icons of your Ubuntu system.
5) Fonts – Set Font size and styles according to your taste.

After making its way through Windows, Ubuntu One is now available for iOS too. Ubuntu One app is now available at the app-store for iOS users. The Android version of this app has been hugely successful and the iOS version delivers to the same high standard, so you can secure and manage your photos and files directly from your iOS device wherever you are.

Steadyflow is a GTK+ based download manager that aims for minimalism, ease of use, and a clean, malleable codebase. It should be easy to control, whether from the GUI, command line, or D-Bus. This direct download manager is very simple and lightweight and works very well.

A  better browser integration, simple UI and better speeds make it an ideal for Ubuntu systems. Steadyflow is available for Ubuntu via the following  PPA.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sikon/steadyflow
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install steadyflow

Chromeflow -There is a Chrome/Chromium extension available for Steadyflow known as Chromeflow and it can be downloaded from here ( 32 bit / 64 bit ). Just go to the link while using Chrome, download the file and click it to get it installed. This will make things even more simpler. A right click will do everything.

Steadyflow is better than its counterparts in the following ways -

• It has very simple sleek and easy to use interface and is really lightweight.
• The indicator menu is expanded and now includes download controls for individual files and for all files at once.
• Password authentication is now supported for FTP, SFTP, SMB and so on.
• It is possible to select multiple files to start, stop, or remove them all at once. In addition, a file’s context menu now includes a “copy URL” option.
• If Steadyflow is on the Unity dock, its icon’s context menu will include an “Add download” item.

About a week ago while roaming around, i found this very interesting post on Mint Blog that showed a very new project that is aimed at improving the Linux Desktop experience. They are putting a lot into this project to make it more stable, eyecandy and user-friendly. It was mentioned on the blog that they started patching existing alternatives such as Gnome Shell, used MATE and MGSE to provide an easier transition away from Gnome 2, but without being able to truly offer an alternative that was better than Gnome 2. Both MATE and Gnome Shell are promising projects but MATE’s ultimate goal is to replicate Gnome 2 using GTK+ and Gnome Shell doesn’t provide what is needed in a desktop. So for these reasons they’re designing a new desktop called Cinnamon, which leverages new technology and implements their vision. See for yourself -

Cool indeed ! They are constantly improving this project and is right now available for testing in Mint 12 and Ubuntu both. But for the time, being its not advisable to do the transition for stability reasons. With easy to use interfaces, a familiar layout, advanced technologies and principles you’ve already got to to use in Linux Mint, you’ll quickly find yourself at home. Configuration is also something important in Cinnamon as one of its fundamental goals is to make you feel at home, thus giving you the ability to change the way the desktop works, looks and behave.

Under the hood Cinnamon is forked from Gnome Shell and based on Mutter and Gnome 3. It’s already available for Linux Mint 12, Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 16, OpenSUSE 12.1 and Arch Linux and will soon make its way (along with MGSE and MATE) to LMDE when Gnome 3.2 enters Debian Testing.The latest release, Cinnamon 1.1.3, brings stability and improvements to what has already become our favorite desktop. The latest version of Cinnamon is 1.3 and is available for Ubuntu users here.

For Mint 12 users Cinnamon is available from the Linux Mint repository. Install the package “cinnamon-session“, log out and choose the “Cinnamon” session at the login screen.and you are good to go.

A few cool things already in Cinnamon

• One unique bottom panel which you can auto-hide (and which location will be configurable in the future)
• Window list, “show desktop” button, systray icons and all the features introduced in MGSE
• A menu featuring the same layout as mintMenu, with options to add applications to favorites, to the desktop or to the panel
• Custom panel launchers
• A sound applet which lets you launch and control your music, and switch your sound from your speakers to your headphones and vice-versa.

Cinnamon project looks promising for the linux users who want the Gnome 2 desktop experience and everything handy. Stay tuned for more…

Scribus is an Open Source program that brings professional page layout to Linux/UNIX, Mac OS X and Windows desktops with a combination of press-ready output and new approaches to page design. Underneath a modern and user-friendly interface, Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as color separations, CMYK and Spot Color support, ICC color management, and versatile PDF creation.

After a long intensive work by developers, the stable version of Scribus is out. Scribus 1.4 came with a lot of surprises for all the fans out there as it opens a whole new paradigm of desktop publishing. More than 2000 feature requests and bugs have been resolved since the development of this new version started, wow !!! It is now also available for Mac OSX 10.5 or later versions as well as a native version for OS/2 Warp 4 and eComStation.

Installation

Open the Terminal and type the following commands in sequence -

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then copy the lines below and paste them in the gedit window you just opened and save and exit.

For Ubuntu 11.10 -

deb http://debian.scribus.net/debian/ oneiric main
deb http://debian.tagancha.org/debian/ oneiric main

For Ubuntu 11.04, 10.10, 10.04 – replace ‘oneiric’ by ‘natty’ , ‘maverick’ & ‘lucid’ respectively in both lines.

After that, type

sudo apt-get install scribus

Wait for the file to get installed and then fire-up scribus and start working

What does 5 billion MD5 brute forces per second mean?

MD5 Hash of a 7 char string containing only lower-case alphabets and numbers cracked within 30 seconds. Think how fast 8 x HD 6990s would be.

Note: oclHashcat-lite didn’t work for nVidia cards. Don’t know why. Could be either – software or driver issue. Don’t consider this an Apples-to-Apples comparison. But still this is the best what each platforms can offer.

Gwibber 3.2 is a complete new experience from previous version.It has been rewritten using Vala and GTK3 making it much more faster and lighter consuming less resources (though I personally use Hotot for Twitter and Chrome for Facebook).

Déjà Dup has been added to Ubuntu 11.10 as default backup tool with support to upload files directly to the cloud.Lets hope this one gets better .Déjà Dup is a simple backup tool that hides the complexity of backing up and uses duplicity as the backend.

Though this is a good package but I’m still missing Native App for Cutomizing Themes and Icons Complete Recovery Solution.Overall I’ll give it 7/10
