Canonical developers came with Unity 2D when poeple were eperiencing problems with the Unity 3D interface. There was a very little difference in them but yeah, Unity 2D was made to run on any system. Good news is that Unity 2D is repotedly going to get a New Design which can be previewed in the following video. This is how unity looks like:
