A dock is a rectangular bar that has launchers and applets on it that can replace the Gnome panel and act as an eye candy as well. The main aim behind these docks is to improve the usability of Gnome and add cool looks to the desktop. We have 3 best Docks for your Ubuntu system viz. Avant Window Navigator

Avant Window Navigator (AWN) is a dock-like navigation bar for the gnome desktop. It can be used to keep track of open windows and behaves like a normal window list. So it can add to functionality, simplicity and usability of your Ubuntu & can work to replace your existing Gnome Panels and help add Eyecandy to your Ubuntu Desktop.

Install :- Open the Terminal and type in this :-

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:awn-testing/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-trunk avant-window-navigator-data-trunk python-awn-trunk awn-settings-trunk awn-applets-c-core-trunk awn-applets-c-extras-trunk awn-applets-python-core-trunk python-awn-extras-trunk awn-applets-python-extras-trunk

Make sure you donot have any previous version installed from the Ubuntu repository. If yes, then remove it via Synaptic.

XBMC 10.0 in Ubuntu 10.10

XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media. All the XBMC fans out there will be glad to know that the much awaited XBMC 10.0 ‘Dharma’ has been released and is now available for use. The main focus of this release was the “Add-ons”. Earlier we used to google to find new themes etc for XBMC but this ends up here with 10.0 release as 11 Themes are already available by default for XBMC. Just goto the Add-ons section and select the one you like. XBMC 10.0 is all set to rock.

Installation via PPA :- Open the terminal and type :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc

and done. Access it via Applications> Sound & Video > XBMC. This PPA also works for Ubuntu 10.04 and 9.10.

Lubuntu 10.10

Lubuntu is a derivative of Ubuntu with LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as the default desktop environment instead of Gnome. It has been designed to be light, fast, less resource hungry and more power efficient and every small thing has been taken care of while choosing basic applications for this derivative. The latest version is Lubuntu 10.10 which is no doubt based on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.
