Kubuntu is an OS based on Ubuntu with KDE as the desktop environment. It contains all the applications you need: a web browser, an office suite, media apps, an instant messaging client and many more. We are glad to announce that Kubuntu 10.10 is released with a lot of improvements and bug-fixes making it a perfect KDE desktop.

With the release of Ubuntu 10.10, Kubuntu 10.10 also came up with a lot of changes,bug-fixes and improvements starting from the new kernel 2.6.35-22.33 to KDE 4.5.1 to Plasma+Netbook merging feature (in 700MB Cd image), new Rekonq browser and much more.

Whats’ with the New release ?

1. KDE 4.5.1 is ready to rule.
2. Rekonq, the new default browser for KDE based on Qt Webkit.
3. Plasma Netbook now sports the Global Menu by default.
4. Pulseaudio is the default sound server.
5. KDE Platform, Workspaces, and Applications have been updated to 4.5.1.
6. Kubuntu now comes with Qt 4.7.
7. KPackageKit updates bring a faster backend and an updated UI that provides an application focused view.
8. Bluedevil has become the default bluetooth stack.
9. The default font on the install media is now the Ubuntu/Kubuntu font.
10. It merged the Desktop and Netbook images into one. Either Plasma Desktop or Plasma Netbook workspace will be started at login as best suits your computers. Users will be able to switch between the two in System Settings. Seems like a really good feature.

Get it to Work on your PC :-

Installing Kubuntu 10.10 is more or less the same as that of any other official derivative. The new thing is the Ubiquity and its eyecandy interface. The installation initializes right after 2nd step i.e. Partitioning and rest of the settings like “time zones”, “username/password” etc. are set in the further steps while the installation is going on. This makes the whole process faster and more efficient. Take a look :

A sneak-peek to the KDE 4.5.1 Desktop :-

The Kubuntu’s KDE 4.5.1 Desktop looks really cool and the best part, Plasma Dashboard and Netbook interface are merged into one. This makes it really easy for users to switch to Kubuntu Netbook Desktop in just 1 click (coolest feature) and that too in just a 700MB CD image. Rekonq works well and the looks are also good. Amarok gets an update and they updated Kpackagekit’s UI. New features such as application screenshots and update changelogs are just a few of the enhancements.

Its been just about 6 months since the release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support) and we have been eagerly waiting for Ubuntu 10.10 since the release schedule announcement. We have witnessed a lot of changes since Alpha1 release of 10.10. Canonical promised it to be the Perfect 10/10 and now we can say that they have done it and they have done it well. What’s New :- We have been wondering from where to start because this release has witnessed a lot of changes.

Let’s start it with Ubuntu 10.10 Installer >

-On boot Ubiquity will offer you the option of running the live system or installing directly.

-The installer now lets you download updates and restricted packages such as MP3 playback during the install so you don’t have to do them later.

-The installation starts after the disk setup page.

-The installation will continue when you will be asked to fill up your details like Time-Zones, Keyboard layout, Username/Password etc. making the installation process much faster.

Besides the new Linux kernel 2.6.35-22.33, here are some key features of Ubuntu 10.10:

-Gnome 2.32 makes the desktop look even better.

• The defaults web browser is now Rekonq.
• Pulseaudio is the default sound server.
• Kubuntu’s installer (Ubiquity) now has an updated look and layout & the install starts just after Partitioner setup making install process faster.
• KPackageKit updates bring a faster backend and an updated UI that provides a new Categories page, and new features such as a backup/restore tool for the list of installed packages.
• Plasma Netbook now sports the Global Menu by default.
