Kubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 just released has the latest KDE software including KDE 4.7.1 Plasma Workspaces and Applications. This release has undergone many changes regarding the latest updates, DE improvements and application updates. A few of them are listed below. This release is stable than the previous one but yet again we recommend you either use LiveCD or use Virtual machine for the testing purpose and wait till October for its  final release.

Kubuntu 11.04 – The KDE version of Ubuntu Natty Narwhal that makes your heart beat even faster is ready for download. Kubuntu 11.04 Beta has come up with some really cool features and updates ranging form the new KDE 4.6.1 to Owncloud to Plasma Desktop. Everything you need is already there.

Download the image, burn it to a DVD or make a USB bootable and follow the installation instructions below.

Clean Install

Installation is yet again the same rather its easier and better. Simply boot from the disk and follow the Installer instructions and do as prompted.

• Select your language.
• Installer will check the system state.
• Then select Disk to install Kubuntu.
• Select Manual Partitioning and make a root ‘/’ partition of min. 5GB space. After that make a ‘swap’ partition and click Finish. (Make a separate ‘/boot’ if you are dual booting and dont want to loose your Grub in any case.)
• Then set up your TimeZone.
• Set Keyboard Preferences.
• Enter Username and password.
• Now wait for the installation to complete.

Upgrade from 10.10

Upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 is a really easy job. We would recommend to wait till the Final release scheduled for April. For those who cant wait to test, here it goes :-

Method 1) To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2, type in

update-manager -d

and press Enter. Update Manager will open up and display the message, “New distribution release ’11.04′ is available.” Click Upgrade and follow the instructions.

Method 2) Alternate CD Upgrade -

Download a Kubuntu 11.04 Alternate CD and then burn it -

1) Insert the alternate CD, open it in a new window, open the Run Command dialog by pressing Alt+F2 or if this is not working right click on the desktop or as a last resort, run a terminal window. Type

kdesudo ”/media/cdrom/cdromupgrade”

in the command box and press the return button.

2) Enter your password and wait for it to complete.

3) Restart the computer to complete the updrade.

New Features in Kubuntu 11.04

The latest package upgrades for Ubuntu 11.04 are -

• Linux kernel 2.6.38-7 – This kernel update brings little new functionality updates over the version available in Alpha 3. vesafb has been re-enabled as a module to help prevent GPU hangs and screen corruption on boot.
• LibreOffice 3.3.2 – The latest and stable release of Linux office suite from The Document Foundation is ready to roll.
• GCC 4.5 – The GNU toolchain has transitioned to be based off of gcc 4.5 for i386, amd64, ARM omap/omap4 and PowerPC architectures.
• Python 2.7 – All main packages have now been built and and are installable with Python 2.7.
• dpkg 1.16.0 – This is a merge from the community snapshot for multiarch support.
• Upstart 0.9 – Upstart has been updated to 0.9.4-1.
• The new Language Selector module allows you to add, remove, and manage system languages directly from System Settings.
• GTK applications such as Firefox or Inkscape now fit in with KDE’s Oxygen artwork.
• OwnCloud, the remote file storage server from KDE, has been packaged and is available to install from archives.

KDE 4.6 in Ubuntu 10.10

Installing KDE 4.6 in Ubuntu 10.10 is also possible without the upgrades. All you need to do is open the terminal and type this -

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

and after the completion of the upgrade, restart the computer.

Sorry for being a bit late on this but the second major maintenance update to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS has been released by the Ubuntu developer team. This release includes updated server, desktop, alternate installation CDs and DVDs for the i386 and amd64 architectures. This update also includes the official derivatives i.e Kubuntu, Xubuntu etc. Numerous updates have been integrated, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

This release has gone through many bugfixes and updates. Some important of them include :->

• On Wubi, it won’t ask for an install device, but just updates wubildr using the diverted grub-install.
• Mangle whether the ‘ui’ keyword is in syslinux.cfg based on the OS version.
• Fixed ‘crash’ on update/upgrade download error?.
• Install GRUB to the SATA RAID or multipath device when /boot is on such a device, rather than installing to the first hard dis.
• Added missing desktop files and icons.

Most of the fixes are hardware based that means the all-round hardware support have been improved. Installation

Now, after downloading the image, just burn it to a DVD or make a USB bootable (make sure the USB is 2GB or more). Boot into Mint and enter the LIVE user mode. Fireup the installer and follow the instructions:-

1) Select your ‘Language’ and click forward.
2) At the ‘Disk Setup’, select ‘Specify Partitions Manually’ and proceed.

• Select an ‘empty’ partition and click ‘add’ and make one ‘root’ partition by selecting mount point as ‘/’. Select ‘Filesystem type as ‘ext4 journaling filesystem’ and proceed.
• Similarly create a swap partition and click ‘Install now’
• Make sure you allocate 10Gb or more space to root and swap can be made double that of  system-RAM.

3) Select your Timezone and proceed.
4) Select the preferred ‘Keyboard Layout’ and move forward.
5) Enter a desired ‘Username’ and a strong ‘Password’ and tick ‘Require my Password at Login’ to keep things secure.
6) Now, wait or the download to complete and then restart to get to Mint KDE.

Linux Mint 10 Gnome & Debian Edition 201012

Linux Mint also comes in Gnome and Debian Edition. The latter also uses Gnome as DE but its a rolling-distro and is fully compatible with Debian and not Ubuntu as opposed to Mint-Gnome which has been build upon Ubuntu 10.10. LMDE  has all Mint 10 features and following additional ones :-

AWN Styles :- To give AWN a whole new look, just goto “AWN>Dock Preferences” and select “Lucido”in the ‘Style’ section of ‘Preferences’ tab. You can add multiple Docks to your desktop to make it more usable and more awesome at looks.

AWN Themes :- To add more style to AWN, you can set “Lucido theme” to it inorder to make it look good. Just goto AWN>Dock Preferences>Themes & select ‘Lucido’ theme. You can download ‘Radiance & Ambiance Lucido themes’ from here. Just unzip the file and from the ‘themes’ tab of AWN preferences, install the themes an enjoy the new AWN.

Configuring AWN :- To get a really cool look, add “separator” where you want ‘curved edges’. To add ‘more launchers’ to your AWN, just add ‘Simple Launcher’ from ‘utilities’ in the ‘applets’ tab & then drag and drop the Application icon from Ubuntu main menu to AWN to add its launcher. Simple and workable. Take a look at this :

Configuring Docky :- Working with Docky is a lot of fun. To add more launchers, just drag and drop Application from Panel menu and to remove, just Drag ‘em out of docky . Get it to Work on your PC :-

Installing Kubuntu 10.10 is more or less the same as that of any other official derivative. The new thing is the Ubiquity and its eyecandy interface. The installation initializes right after 2nd step i.e. Partitioning and rest of the settings like “time zones”, “username/password” etc. are set in the further steps while the installation is going on. The Kubuntu’s KDE 4.5.1 Desktop looks really cool and the best part, Plasma Dashboard and Netbook interface are merged into one. This makes it really easy for users to switch to Kubuntu Netbook Desktop in just 1 click (coolest feature) and that too in just a 700MB CD image. Rekonq works well and the looks are also good. Amarok gets an update and they updated Kpackagekit’s UI. New features such as application screenshots and update changelogs are just a few of the enhancements.

Conky is a free, lightweight system monitor for GNU/Linux/BSD, that displays any information on your desktop i.e Cpu usage, Disk usage, Download/Upload speeds, CPU/Hard Disk temperatures, list of programs with pid (taking max cpu) etc . Originally a fork of Torsmo, Conky’s torsmo-based code is BSD licensed. New code in Conky has been licensed under the GPL 3.0.

Over the years, Conky has changed significantly from its predecessor, while maintaining simplicity and configurability. Conky can display just about anything, either on your root desktop or in its own window. Not only does Conky have many built-in objects, it can also display just about any piece of information by using scripts and other external programs.

• A big list of OS stats (username, uptime, CPU usage, memory usage, download, upload, disk usage, “top” like process stats, and network monitoring, just to name a few)

Note: You’ll need the X11 development libraries, version 6.8.2 or later. package name is probably libx11-dev on Ubuntu, as well as the development libraries for any additional features and do make sure you have “build-essential” package before trying to install from sources

Getting it to Work :

Launch Conky by typing in

sudo /usr/bin/conky

Type in the root password and press enter & you will see conky running on your Desktop.

Styling it up : Conky by default gives a very gloomy dark look but you can edit to look awesome and display content according to your choice. The Conkyrc file resides in /home/user directory and you can edit it. All you need to do is to edit your .conkyrc. Use

sudo vi /home/user/.conkyrc

and edit it accordingly.

Just download these (extract the files if any). Locate conky script and open it with any text editor (say gedit) and copy all the content and then type :

sudo gedit /home/user/.conkyrc

Repalce the old content with the new code from the downloaded file, save it & exit. Now type

sudo /usr/bin/conky

and enjoy all new conky !

You can also add Conky to your startup. You can get more conky scripts from Gnome-look.org. Just go there in the search box type “Conky” and done. Download and install awesome scripts from there and give a new look to your Desktop.

Note: ‘/user’ must be replaced by your own username.
