Ubuntu 11.10 codenamed Oneiric Ocelot is here making it the 15th release of Ubuntu and taking another step forward in making Ubuntu a better user experience.After integration of Unity in Ubuntu Natty Narwhal this distribution takes another step forward in making Unity a better user experience though some shouting from the Ubuntu Community (but that always occurs ).In a nutshell this version comes with following changes

• Improved Ubuntu Unity User Interface along with Compiz

Other feature for this release include support for GNOME 3 which was kinda freaky in Ubuntu 11.04 , improved Nautilus , better Ubuntu One integration and all this in a smaller DVD (of-course content size is smaller not the DVD). More on that later but first lets install it . . .

INSTALLATION

Like rest of the Ubuntu distributions this too comes with very easy to use installer with no hassles in installation at all.It has been optimized to a great extent effectively taking less than 15 minutes for my machine

Ubuntu Software Center(USC) is completely revamped in Ubuntu 11.10 featuring one click installation for almost all the applications.Nautilus has been removed and now USC is solely responsible for Software Management in Ubuntu though you can install Nautilus anytime whenever you want.USC comes with categorization of various applications including the paid ones with previews of Top Rated as well as Newly Added Applications . The new interface looks neat and intuitive though a bit laggy with features to view Installed applications along with your installation history.

Gwibber 3.2 is a complete new experience from previous version.It has been rewritten using Vala and GTK3 making it much more faster and lighter consuming less resources (though I personally use Hotot for Twitter and Chrome for Facebook).

BACKUP

Déjà Dup Backup Tool

Déjà Dup has been added to Ubuntu 11.10 as default backup tool with support to upload files directly to the cloud.Lets hope this one gets better .Déjà Dup is a simple backup tool that hides the complexity of backing up and uses duplicity as the backend.

THINGS STILL TO LOOK OUT FOR . . .

Though this is a good package but I’m still missing Native App for Cutomizing Themes and Icons Complete Recovery Solution.Overall I’ll give it 7/10

Sorry for being a bit late cause we have been extensively busy in some other work.This beta release of Ubuntu 10.10 has come up with a lots of updates and new features like the new Ambiance and Radiance themes, new wallpapers, improved Ubiquity installer, Gnome 2.32 beta1 and much more. The kernel packages were updated to version  , based on the final release of Linux kernel 2.6.35.3. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition and Netbook Edition continue the trend of ever-faster boot speeds, with improved startup times and a smoother, streamlined boot experience. • For 10.10 Beta, Kubuntu has merged the Desktop and Netbook images into one image featuring both the Plasma Desktop and Plasma Netbook workspaces. The appropriate workspace for your machine will be launched at login, you can also change the workspace in System Settings.
• The defaults web browser is now Rekonq.
• Pulseaudio is the default sound server.
• Kubuntu’s installer (Ubiquity) now has an updated look and layout & the install starts just after Partitioner setup making install process faster.
• KPackageKit updates bring a faster backend and an updated UI that provides a new Categories page, and new features such as a backup/restore tool for the list of installed packages.
• Plasma Netbook now sports the Global Menu by default.

“The Ubuntu Software Store aka USS is a graphical utility for package management in Ubuntu.” is what probably Canonical describes it as but it seems to me a bit more than that and as they’ve promised it will be a Unified Package Handler replacing Synaptic,GDebi,Add & Remove & Other Application management Programs.Though 0.3.10 was the version that was reviewed but I promise you its worth  to look after.

So exactly same as their diagrams described  ,USS was just the same & easy to use.You still can’t expect a lot of features but even in an alpha release it was working fine.Divided into 11 categories termed as “Departments” it was indeed very we’ll put up though I felt it same as the old “Add & Remove” but  without ratings.The installation was on breeze but i wasn’t able to do multiple installation at once.Since its too early to discuss cons,here are  few pros of it :

• Very Well Built Interface
  
• Single Click Installation & Removal
• Well Defined Departments
• Choice Of Adding Sources (though it could’ve been better)
• Screenshot Previews Of Softwares (with a link to website)

The sleekness in placing things really demonstrated that what developers are looking forward to .It will be really a marvelous piece of software in future. Got some innovative idea then do comment here…!!!
