Aptitude is a front-end to the Advanced Packaging Tool (APT) system. It displays a list of software packages and allows the user to interactively pick packages to install or remove. It has an especially powerful search system utilizing flexible search patterns. Aptitude also emulates most apt-get command line options. Newer versions also come with a GTK+ interface.

Linoob’s Guide to Install Source Package Tarballs

Hello Folks ..Welcome to Linoob’s Guide to install from Source Package ie Tarballs also commonly seen as tar.gz/bz2 files.Though be strongly recommend using PPA for installation or the DEB package sometimes these aren’t available and we have to rely on Tarballs package.Don’t panic cause installation using Tarballs is as simple but is avoided cause it comes at a cost of few extra steps which we generally tend to avoid. ? Building from source is a reasonably simple process, but it can be complicated sometimes. You can even end up with two versions of an application installed simultaneously which can cause a lot of problems. So, all you need to do is Be Careful !

Apex Court in India switches to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

The Supreme Court of India has directed all the courts across the nation to switch over to Ubuntu 10.04. The apex court has also given all the courts customised Ubuntu Linux DVD for installation. Over 17,000 courts across the country were using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for the last four years. The e-committee of the Supreme Court Of India has issued a circular for ‘Guidelines for Roll-out and Installation of Ubuntu Linux for Indian Judiciary’ for the purpose. The circular talks about the replication and installation of the Ubuntu Linux operating system.

The circular says that an acknowledgment of Installation & Receipt of Ubuntu Linux OS DVD be given by the judicial officers in the prescribed form. >It instructs immediate circulation of ‘Ubuntu Installation & Features Video’ to all the judicial officers so that they can understand the same before DVD reaches them. “The Ubuntu Linux operating system can be installed by the judicial officer on his own also as the installation process is very easy, intuitive and self-explanatory.

Cairo Dock 2.3 for Ubuntu

Cairo Dock – An awesome dock for Ubuntu desktops has been released. As we have already discussed in our previsou post ‘Ultimate Docks for Ubuntu‘, Cairo GLX dock is a dock manager that uses Cairo / OpenGL to render graphics (many in correlation with Compiz) with full hardware acceleration. It’s fully configurable and fully customizable and can be used as a taskbar too. You can easily add applets in the dock or as a desklet. So, its a must have for eyecandy lovers.

Install

Open the terminal and type this -

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cairo-dock-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock

and done. Now close the terminal and fireup Cairo dock from Applications>System Tools>Cairo Dock and enjoy.

SuperTuxKart 0.7.1 Released

SuperTuxKart is a Free 3D Kart racing game with many cool tracks and carts making it a real fun game to play. You can play with up to 4 friends on one PC, racing against each other or just try to beat the computer. It is written in the C++ programming language and uses OpenAL for sounds. It used the libraries SDL and for graphics until milestone 0.7, when the project switched to the Irrlicht Engine.You can do a single race against other karts, compete in one of several Grand Prix, try to beat the high score in time trials on your own, play battle mode against your friends, and more! Its a real fun game but requires concentration, hand eye coordination and timing as well.
