Banshee 2.0 – Perfect Media Player for Ubuntu

Banshee 2.0 has been released after a long wait and to be frank we’ve lost count of days we waited for it . Surprisingly, this Media player has replaced Rythmbox and made it to Ubuntu’s Default Media application & will come preinstalled in Ubuntu 11.04. Banshee 2.0 will be available in Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 onwards. So regular Natty testers will get it in an upgrade. Talking of Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 users, PPA is available to get it easily on your system. This release of Banshee includes UI improvements, Ubuntu One Music Store extensions, Music Library improvements, Subtitles & numerous bugfixes.

PPA Install

Banshee can be easily installed or upgraded from the following PPA. Just type the following in your terminal, type root password when prompted and you are good to go.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install banshee

Wait for it to complete. After the install or upgrade is done, fireup Banshee from Applications>Sound and Video and enjoy the latest version.

Opera 11.10 ‘Barracuda’ Released

One of the most famous browsers on the internet i.e. Opera got an awesome updae today. Yes! Opera 11.10 codnamed ‘Barracuda’ has been released and is ready to download. This release is also there for Ubuntu 11.04, so that Natty users can also enjoy their loving browser’s improved version. This time Opera has come up with a new name ‘Barracuda’, a new engine Presto, a new image format WebP and many UI improvements and loads of bugfixes. Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 for Ubuntu 11.04

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 – The next version of Ubuntu tweaker is about to be released. As the release of Ubuntu 11.04 is coming closer, things are getting better. According to the developers, a public beta testing will be available soon, and our shiny Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 will be released as Ubuntu 11.04 Natty comes out. Thats awesome ! Synapse Launcher 0.2.6 for Ubuntu

Synapse is a semantic launcher written in Vala that you can use to start applications as well as find and access relevant documents and files by making use of the Zeitgeist engine. Its similar to ‘Gnome-Do’ but its different, looks better and is really fast. We are glad to announce that the latest release of Synapse 0.2.6 is out. This release brings multiple fixes with the Searches, UI problems, Copy to clipboard action and other bugs.

Installation

Synapse is available via PPA making it a matter of few steps getting it to work.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:synapse-core/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install synapse pastebinit

Alright! So now we have Synapse installed. Working on it would be really easy.

GNOME Shell is the defining technology of the GNOME 3 desktop user experience. It provides core interface functions like switching to windows and launching applications. GNOME Shell takes advantage of the capabilities of modern graphics hardware and introduces innovative user interface concepts to provide a delightful and easy to use experience. The GNOME Shell is currently in active development and while many planned features are not yet implemented it is stable enough for everyday use.

Ubuntu Control Center: One-Stop-Shop for Everything

Ubuntu Control Center or UCC is an application inspired by Mandriva Control Center and aims to centralize and organize in a simple and intuitive form the main configuration tools for Ubuntu distribution. UCC uses all the native applications already bundled with Ubuntu, but it also utilizes some third-party apps. In all, it serves like a Control Panel to your Ubuntu desktop giving your enough power to control each and every part of your system whether it be installed Software, Hard Disks, User accounts, Network, and also allows you to upgrade to the latest development release to take part in Ubuntu testing. So, we can conclude that this application is worth installing.

VLC 1.1.8 Released for Ubuntu 10.10

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. The latest package of VLC just got released is VLC 1.1.8 which is available for Ubuntu via PPA. Not only VLC but the Official VLC website also got an awesome new design.

Installation

Open the terminal and type the following commands in sequence :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc vlc-plugin-pulse

and done.

LibreOffice 3.3.2 Released

The Document Foundation has come up with a good news today i.e. the second micro release of Libreoffice 3.3 is out now. This is primarily a bug-fix release which is all set to improve the stability & usability of the software and sets the platform for the next release viz Libreoffice 3.4, due in mid May. If you already have LibreOffice 3.3.2 RC2, then you dont need to remove it and reinstall it all over. Just wait for the update to hit the Update Manager.
