Introducing Google Play

Google Android Market has evolved into a new and exciting portal ‘Google Play’. The work is being done by google for about a year or so, the result seems really great. A lot of thought, vision and innovation has been put up by Google into this project making it an online platform for Movies, Apps, Games, Music and Books as well. For now, all we can say is “There’s a lot more to it than meets the eye”. The Play website quote -

“Now your favorite music, books, movies, apps, and games are all in one place that’s accessible from the Web and any Android device. Discover, buy and share like never before.”

Banshee 2.2.0 Released

Banshee Media Player as we know it is the default media player for Ubuntu 11.04. A new version of Banshee is out now. Banshee 2.2 is the culmination of six months’ work by 35 developers, 38 translators and dozens of bug reporters and testers. It is a stable release, the successor to Banshee 2.0. It will be available in updates or via official PPA i.e ppa:banshee-team/ppa soon enough.

VLC 1.1.8 Released for Ubuntu 10.10

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. The latest package of VLC just got released is VLC 1.1.8 which is available for Ubuntu via PPA. Not only VLC but the Official VLC website also got an awesome new design.

Installation

Open the terminal and type the following commands in sequence :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc vlc-plugin-pulse

and done.

Banshee 1.9.4 for Ubuntu

Banshee is an open-source media player, originally called Sonance. It has been built upon Mono and Gtk#, & it uses the Helix & GStreamer multimedia platform for encoding and decoding various media formats, including Ogg Vorbis, MP3 ,FLAC etc. Banshee also supports many portable media players, including Apple’s iPod, Android devices and Creative’s ZEN players.

XBMC 10.0 in Ubuntu 10.10

XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media. All the XBMC fans out there will be glad to know that the much awaited XBMC 10.0 ‘Dharma’ has been released and is now available for use. The main focus of this release was the “Add-ons”. Earlier we used to google to find new themes etc for XBMC but this ends up here with 10.0 release as 11 Themes are already available by default for XBMC. Just goto the Add-ons section and select the one you like. XBMC 10.0 is all set to rock.

Installation via PPA :- Open the terminal and type :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc

and done. Access it via Applications> Sound & Video > XBMC. This PPA also works for Ubuntu 10.04 and 9.10.

Ubuntu Studio 10.10: The Perfect Studio

Ubuntu Studio is a multimedia editing/creation flavor of Ubuntu, built for the GNU/Linux audio, video, and graphics enthusiast/professional.

Ubuntu Studio Maverick Meerkat 10.10 is available as a 1.7GB DVD iso image here at Ubuntu Studio Download page.

As we have already covered this topic in detail in our previous post about Ubuntu Studio 9.10 & Ubuntu studio 10.04, we will just be highlighting the changes for this release.

Ubuntu Media Center

The term Media Center may be defined either as a dedicated computer appliance or a specialized application software designed to run on standard personal computer hardware which then becomes a so called “HTPC” (“Home Theater PC”, also sometimes referred to as a “Media PC”), both of which are adapted for playing various kinds of media (music, movies,photos etc.), and it usually has a GUI (Graphical User Interface) . A Media Center typically allows watching movies (DVD, BluRay, and other digital video formats) and watching and recording television broadcasts, playing audio (CD as well as MP3,WMA, and other audio formats) & watching pictures and making galleries to manage them properly.

For Ubuntu , we have three awesome Media Centers lined up namely – XBMC, Enna Media Center and MOOVIDA .

1) XBMC :- XBMC Media Center (formerly named Xbox Media Center) is an award winning free and open source cross-platform media player and home entertainment software . XBMC is available for Linux, OSX, Windows, and the original Xbox. Created in 2003 , XBMC is a non-profit project run and developed by volunteers from different parts of the world. XBMC is available in more than 30 languages. Isn’t it great ! Its graphical user interface allows the user to easily manage video, photos, podcasts, and music from a computer, optical disk, local network, and the internet using a remote control/mouse.
It is a popular alternative to Microsoft’s Windows Media Center and Apple’s Front Row, & has a skinnable and user-configurable interface and plugin support.
